I just been through the experience all of say when if our dog has to die pray it is in our arms but also never want to deal with or think about. My little dog was sick for over 3 weeks, plus my other dog had cancer which indicated surgery. I did a ton of research on both dogs, even spoke with Vets at Davis and all concurred with the treatment being advised. My dog did make it through the surgery but died later at home due to stroke..was fast n sudden. Dr Headings did not hesitate to meet us and she herself was greatly upset by his death...it seemed almost as much as us. Surely it is hard on Vets to lose a dog to unknown reasons...especially when a long surgery had gone so well. Entire staff there was sympathetic and very upset about his death...really touched me how much they all cared.
My senior but smaller dog also had seemed to finally eat until her pal died at home. She never ate much on her own again and eventually the time came when her body was clearly shutting down. The vet had made it clear, she be there for us both at any hour which calmed my worried heart my dog would suffer. They even came in on day they were to be closed when i finally realized it was time.
I kind of wonder about the review from out of town...just suspect if you ever spend some time with people at this office. Never seen new tile for one thing, she always put my dogs over her needs which really touched my heart..she is not the owner so yes she must follow the billing agreement worked out by the owner. Sadly, i known people who had larger surgeries done here with excellent results and did not finish paying off the agreed monthly payments...but they do have Care Credit which is excellent way to pay for high vet or medical bills...so many months are without interest or use to be.
Vets for the most part are not rich for the number of years they must attend expensive colleges..so yes they must also make money. That means we as pet owners hopefully can afford any treatment our loved companions may need. But if you cannot..no judgement on doing what you can afford will be shown you at this vets.
At nearly midnight on a Sunday, we had our first phone call answered by a real person, we did not have to leave a message and wait for an unpromised response. The on call veterinarian I spoke to, was calm, polite, exceptionally compassionate about the situation, and promptly met us at the office to treat our dog. This was our first experience with this office, and it has been a great one. This was the only veterinary hospital who not only answered, but was willing to keep the business local. Every other response we received was a referral to either Reading, CA or Medford, OR.
I been through this often enough and the Vet and Alex both were more friends that day then business. Both just showed both my dog and i compassionate care in such a time of grief.
I think that the Vet, would always put what the owner wants first as some of us treat our pets as family others do not. If you are like me and they are your family, well you come to the right place, she will do all she can to help your pet as well as offer her shoulder to cry on if necessary. She is open to questions about other treatments and will research them if she is not aware.
I just got back from Black Butte Veterinary Hospital.....and I am FURIOUS. I have a +20 year old cat who developed a swelling on the side of her face yesterday. I thought she might have an abscess so took her up to be checked out. I've been a client there for more than 20 years, and although the vet who owned the practice retired and I'm not accustomed to the new one.....I figured I'd stick with the practice. OK....so the vet thought the cat might have some thyroid issues, and agreed she needs an antibiotic and to be stabilized before they try and work on her teeth. Which DO need work. She's in some pain on the R side, the one that was swollen. I agreed to a blood panel. She IS slightly above normal on her thyroid. The upshot of the entire visit is this. I had stuffed a couple of $50's in my purse.....but the bill came to $113 and I only had $100......SO.....they refused..REFUSED....to give her either the antibiotics or the thyroid medication. I mean, they could look at my history and see that I pay them, but for $13 lousy bucks you're going to refuse medication to a sick old animal who's in pain and NEEDS IT???? I was stunned, astonished and ultimately FURIOUS. I wouldn't go back there if they paid ME.
I been taking my dogs to this hospital for their yearly check up for all of their lives. I been lucky that they only needed dental work, spaying /neutering and shots but all were done professionally and with one on one care. I was always with them during the exam.
Two words: STAY AWAY. I am a writer from NYC who just completed a six-month,16,000 mile drive around America. While driving through Mt. Shasta, I came across a near-homeless man whose German Shepard was close to death from rat poison. I loaded the man and his dog into my truck and we rushed to Black Butte Veterinary Hospital. I knew that the man had little money and was not about to let his dog die, even if it meant that I had to foot the bill. Upon arrival, I expressed this to the vet, Kristy Headings, i.e. that "I was just passing through and wanted to help this man and his dog" and if she would consider not charging me an exorbitant amount of money. She looked at the dog, who was hemorrhaging blood out of its nose and mouth, and then looked at me. The reflection in her eyes said "It's been such a slow week...I finally have a desperate sucker who will shell out the money for me and my sorority sisters to party it up at TGI Friday's tonight!!!" She would have NOTHING of it, and would sooner see the dog die than to shave a few bucks off of the bill. Regardless, I paid her ridiculous bill and the dog lived. This girl, (I call her a "girl" because she looks to be fresh out of veterinary school and whose daddy purchased her double-wide trailer to operate out of), is SHAMEFUL and DISGUSTING. Ready for the best part?...there were NO other animals being treated while I was there and we were forced to wait almost 2 hours for her to attend to the dog. It was only after I stormed past her receptionist (if that's how you would describe the lame duck answering her phone) and walked into her office to witness her posting something on Facebook, (yes...FACEBOOK), that she decided to get up and examine the dog. This dog was bleeding out all over her freshly laid linoleum floor while she was chatting away on Facebook! This post is NOT about the money I paid, but rather the utter LACK of professionalism as well as a CLEAR disregard of an animal's health. Animals cannot speak and tell their owners where to take them when they are in need of medical attention, so I will take it upon myself to speak for them now: PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS AND ANIMALS TO THIS PLACE!
I also noticed that most the clients coming in while i spent a lot of time there, all seemed to love their pets like family which says something about how people there treat their loved pets. All want the best care hopefully nothing too serious but if the time comes...they all were so sensitive to not just my dog's needs but also my own. I strongly recommend Dr Headings there at Blk Butte Vet plus the techs and even the nice receptionist(s)/ all treated me with respect, professionalism and genuine caring feelings.
